Maryland driver's road rage leads to several accidents, injuries

Heavy traffic in Baltimore and other areas of Maryland is enough to make anyone a little cranky. Whether you're a daily commuter or are running late for an evening date or other appointment, you may have gotten frustrated by traffic jams or specific drivers on the road. But there's no excuse for the kind of road rage that leads to intentional car accidents like the one a Frederick County, Maryland, man is accused of causing last weekend. In addition to damaging several vehicles, the accidents caused numerous injuries.

The man was driving a Nissan pickup truck south on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway Saturday evening when he began to veer into the lane next to him. The driver of a Subaru in that lane sounded his horn, which led the truck driver to intentionally ram his truck into the Subaru, according to police. The truck continued moving but then suddenly stopped, causing the traffic behind him to come to a halt. The truck driver and his passenger then got out of the vehicle, approached the Subaru and started banging on it with their fists and knees, police said.

The driver and passenger of a third vehicle noticed the incident and got out to help the Subaru driver as he called police. They managed to get the truck driver and passenger to stop, at least until the third vehicle's occupants left. The truck occupants then left and proceed to chase the third car. When the truck caught up, it slammed into the rear end and then hit the passenger side, causing the car to spin off the highway, according to police.

Shortly after that crash, the truck's driver lost control, causing the truck to cross the median and roll multiple times before coming to a rest on the hood of another car. The driver was ejected from the vehicle, which police said contained several empty and unopened alcoholic beverage containers. Five people in all were taken to a hospital, including the truck driver and passenger.

In addition to several criminal charges lodged against him -- including DUI -- the truck driver could become the defendant in multiple personal injury lawsuits. Although it's fortunate no one died, being terrorized by a driver with road rage can be extremely traumatic, not to mention painful when the incident involves injuries from intentional accidents.
