Almost 3,000 amputations in 2015 in workplace accidents

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration collects workplace accident data from 26 states. Those states have safety regulations that are higher than federal regulations. The federal safety agency just released a report on March 17, which deals with data from 2015 workplace accident injuries.

According to the data, there about 30 severe injuries on average that were suffered at work each day. There were also 2,644 amputations during 2015. The accidents led to 7,636 employees that were hospitalized. In total, 10,388 severe injuries were reported.

This report is part of the new regulations that make it mandatory for companies to report serious accidents within 24 hours. However, OSHA thinks that about 50 percent of injuries simply aren't reported -- at least that's what OSHA thinks is happening in the states where it collects data. This is likely because the smaller companies just have no idea that there is a new system in place.

The manufacturing industry was at the top of the list for having the highest proportion of injured workers. Next was construction, transportation, warehousing and oil and gas extraction.

The goal of the new system is to make each workplace safer for employees. Even when an accident occurs, most companies have made changes immediately after an accident -- before an OSHA inspector even arrives on the scene. Unreported injuries can cost employers between $1,000 and $7,000, too. There are plans in place to make those fines even higher.

If you have been denied workers' compensation benefits, you need the help of an experienced personal injury attorney. He or she can file an appeal for you and will work diligently to get you the benefits you deserve.
