Serious brain injuries can require a lifetime of expensive care

When someone suffers a brain injury, it can be difficult to know exactly what symptoms will be present down the road. This is because there are many symptoms possible, and this injury affects people differently. While any kind of trauma to the head and neck area can cause bruising, bleeding, tearing and swelling, there are certain warning signs you should be aware of and watch for. These include:

-- Unusual tiredness or sluggishness

-- Confusion and difficulty recalling recent events

-- Dizziness and nausea

-- Severe headache

-- Numbness or weakness on one side of the body

Should you observe any of these symptoms, get medical attention immediately. A person can have a head injury and still feel as though he or she is fine.

There are two types of head injuries: open and closed. When the skull is fractured, it is an open injury. When the skull is not fractured, the injury is a closed brain injury.

If your brain injury was caused by the negligence of another person, you may need to seek compensation through a civil lawsuit. Treating head injuries can be very expensive, but an evaluation by a physician can have a huge impact on whether or not on your civil case. For example, the physician will want to know:

-- If you are able to work

-- If you have a right to get other types of economic compensation

-- Whether you can live by yourself

-- Whether physical therapy can help improve his or her condition

Understanding your rights after a negligent or reckless act has caused your brain injury is important. At Cohen Snyder Eisenberg & Katzenberg PA, we represent brain injury victims in their pursuit of compensation from negligent or reckless persons.
