Bad weather plays role in fatal accident

Police say that the rain and thunderstorms that moved through the area last weekend, which caused flooding and power outages, may have also played a role in causing a fatal accident in Maryland.

The accident happened at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Singer Road and Route 24 in Abingdon, according to police at the scene. The accident was so severe that investigations needed to close the roadway for about three hours while they responded to the accident.

According to the news release given by the state troopers, a Chrysler P.T. Cruiser driven by a Maryland woman was traveling westbound on Singer Road and sitting at a traffic light. However, police believe she accelerated through the intersection due to unknown reasons, and a Kia Sorrento driven by a Port Deposit man crashed into the P.T. Cruiser.

Medical responders pronounced the driver or the P.T. Cruiser dead at the scene of the accident. The five individuals in the Kia, ranging in age from 32 years old to 12 months old, needed to be taken to the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center with injuries.

The heavy storms caused downed trees, flooding and a sweep of power outages in the county from lightning strikes. The National Weather Service issued Flash flood warnings, and flooding happened throughout the area. More than 3,300 residents were without power beginning Saturday, though most had it returned by Sunday at noon.

No other vehicle accidents were reported during the storm. According to the personnel of Harford County Emergency Operations Center, they had not dispatched emergency staff due to any other emergencies.
