Wrong-way collision results in one death, two others injured

| Nov 4, 2011 | Truck Accidents

It only takes a few seconds for an accident to happen, but the consequences can last a lifetime. In very serious cases, motorists and passengers can lose their lives. In car accident cases, a detailed and thorough investigation is often needed to understand exactly what happened. In a recent fatal crash, Maryland police believe they have a good understanding of what caused the accident– a driver was apparently driving the wrong way on the highway.

According to investigators’ reports, a 40-year-old man was driving south in the northbound lanes of U.S. 301 in La Plata, Maryland at about 1:36 in the morning on Sunday, Oct. 23. The man’s vehicle crashed with two others, including a passenger vehicle and a truck, just south of the intersection between U.S. 301 and Fairgrounds Road. The car accident resulted in the man’s death.

According to a Maryland State Police report, the 40-year-old driver’s 1993 Isuzu Trooper crashed head on into a 2007 Toyota Corolla driven by a 34-year-old Nanjemoy man, with a 32-year-old female passenger.

The police report says that the 34-year-old driver of the Toyota Corolla swerved to avoid the Isuzu Trooper, but sideswiped a 2010 Peterbilt 18-wheeler.

Both people inside of the Toyota Corolla were airlifted to R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with non-critical injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured and did not need hospitalization.

The 40-year-old driver of the Isuzu Trooper was pronounced dead at La Plata’s Civista Medical Center shortly after the accident.
