Alleged drunk driver causes accident with school bus

| Dec 2, 2011 | Car Accidents

Maryland authorities believe that a recent school bus accident that sent more than a dozen students to the hospital was caused by a drunk driver. Students from the Great Mills High School girls basketball team were returning home from a game when a chain of events caused the bus to careen off the highway, hitting trees before coming to a stop in the woods.

A 45-year-old man was charged with DUI after police said he failed to wait for another vehicle to clear the intersection before pulling out. He hit the vehicle, which then hit the school bus. The wreck occurred at about 9:30 p.m., but according to authorities, it was mid-morning the next day before the man’s blood alcohol level decreased enough for him to have a bond hearing.

When a motor vehicle accident involves a large vehicle, serious injuries often happen as a result. Fortunately, the injuries caused by this accident were all described as minor, and school officials praised the bus driver and other adults on the bus for seeking immediate aid for the students. Of the 28 students on the bus, 15 were transported to a nearby hospital, and 13 were released to their parents at the scene of the crash. A passenger in the other vehicle was also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The man accused of causing the accident was also treated for minor injuries, and he was later arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was held on the DUI charge without bond, and was also charged with failure to yield right of way at an intersection and negligent driving.
