Head-on collision in Maryland results in injuries to 9 people

One of the most valuable lessons we can teach young drivers is that our actions have far-reaching consequences on the road. Being a safe driver does more than protect ourselves and our passengers; it prevents countless others from being affected by a potential car accident.

A recent crash on Maryland's eastern shore provides an example of what can happen when drivers fail to exercise caution. A 22-year-old Laurel, Maryland, woman was driving her SUV on Route 18 in Chester when it crossed over the center line and into oncoming traffic. The vehicle collided head-on with a pickup truck.

As a result of the crash, a total of nine people were injured. The driver of the SUV and all three of her passengers -- two men and a woman, all Maryland residents in their early 20s -- were sent to a hospital with varying degrees of injuries. The driver of the pickup truck, a 50-year-old Washington, D.C., man, also suffered injuries, as did all four of his passengers.

Maryland State Police troopers said alcohol may have played a role in the crash, though it isn't clear if the woman driving the SUV was given field sobriety tests or charged with driving under the influence. Whether or not she ultimately faces criminal charges, if she's found to be at fault for the accident, she could end up defending herself in multiple personal injury lawsuits filed by the other driver and passengers in both vehicles for their medical costs.

Few of us stop to think of the impact our driving habits have on others, but this accident reminds us that we aren't alone on the road, and that safe driving protects everyone around us.
