A painful irony underlies the job classification that heads the latest federal list of jobs where workers are most likely to get hurt or become ill. The job at the top of the list is
in a field whose very purpose is caring for others: nursing and residential care in a state government-run facility.
In fact, nursing and residential care workers occupy several of the top spots in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ list of jobs with the most injuries and illnesses. In addition to state-run nursing and residential care at number one, the list also shows nursing and residential care in local government facilities as third on the list for injuries and illnesses.
Caregiving jobs also showed up in the fourth and sixth spots, respectively. Workers in local government hospitals were in the fourth spot. Private nursing and residential care workers were sixth.
The availability of workers’ compensation for those who are hurt or become ill while performing these jobs is very important. For injured or sick workers in Maryland and elsewhere, it is very important to have a viable work comp program to help make ends meet financially when they can’t work.
What else can we tell from the BLS statistics? First of all, the BLS reports the rate of injury or illness per 100 employees for each job classification. In the case of nursing and residential care workers in state-run settings, the rate was 13.1 per 100. The average number of days that this required away from work or some type of restriction was 7.4.
