While the following story did not occur here in Baltimore, Maryland, the issue at hand is a sad reality for some employees in the Chesapeake area — and, really, all across the country.
Workers at a McDonald’s in New York walked off the job and started an impromptu rally against management after the air conditioner at their workplace broke down. As a result, an employee had to be rushed to the hospital with symptoms consistent with heat stroke. The remaining employees walked out and initiated a strike, demanding that the AC unit be fixed before they returned to work.
Now, while a single incident of an AC unit failing is one thing, the major issue at hand here is that the workers at this McDonald’s say the air conditioner routinely fails every summer. It leaves the employees working in a very hot environment that is clearly dangerous.
Faulty or defective equipment in the workplace is very common. Usually when you hear about these incidents, they involve massive machinery or construction equipment. But there are far more minute pieces of equipment in workplaces all across Maryland that are busted and cause employees to suffer the consequences.
If the employer knew about the faulty equipment and either willfully ignored the issue or refused to get it fixed, it makes them liable for any injuries or accidents that occur as a result of that defective equipment. Employees have a right to a safe workplace; and when that right is infringed upon, the employees should consider legal action against their negligent employer.
