Baltimore contractor fined over 2013 mall construction accident

| Jan 27, 2014 | Construction Workers' Accidents

People in the Baltimore area likely remember an accident at the Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda that killed one worker and injured another. The construction site accident took place during a renovation to the mall, in which a cinema complex is being built. A concrete slab weighing more than 21 tons fell inside a parking garage, and now the contractor responsible is being held accountable.

Maryland investigators fined and cited the Baltimore-based contractor in excess of $11,000 for its role in the accident. Investigators said that the concrete slab wasn’t properly secured before it fell. The fines and citations were due to the failure to maintain safe working conditions.

In addition, Montgomery County investigators fined the company $2,000 for failing to keep the site safe. While the contractor has said it has paid those fines already, the citations and fines issued by the county are being challenged. A meeting next week involving company and government officials will discuss the situation.

Regardless of what is resolved, however, the fact remains that one person lost his life and another was badly injured as a result of the collapse. The daughter of the man who died said that her father died doing something that he loved to do — and as a result of that dedication, the man’s survivors might move to collect workers’ compensation benefits due to his loss. When a family member is injured or killed in a construction site accident, experienced attorneys may be able to help a family to seek financial compensation.
