Changes coming as a result of 2013 truck accident on Bay Bridge

Last July, a semi-truck rear-ended a car on the Maryland Bay Bridge. The impact sent the driver and the vehicle plunging over the wall. The woman was able to escape her vehicle and swim to safety, but the National Transportation and Safety Board recently released a report on the cause of the truck accident.

According to the NTSB, the semi's driver was inexperienced and inattentive, which is about the same conclusion that was drawn by state investigators. According to the chief of police for the Maryland Transportation Authority, the driver was looking in one of the truck's side mirrors when his semi struck the victim's car. It is estimated that the truck may have been traveling as fast as 50 mph when the accident occurred. It was the first time the driver, who was from Canada, had ever driven across the bridge.

Changes are coming as a result of this and other frequent accidents. It is hoped that what has been referred to as an "accident hotspot" will benefit from more signage and that the signage will remind drivers of the speed limit as well as upcoming curves.

When an accident occurs that involves a semi-truck, there is an increased chance of serious injuries or death. According to, a semi-truck and trailer can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs, and that is without being classified as overweight or oversize. It's easy to see how accidents involving such vehicles can have tragic outcomes.

Those who are injured due a truck driver's negligence or recklessness may have a right to seek compensation for a variety of civil claims. Criminal charges do not have to be filed for a civil judgment to be awarded to an injured party.
