9 injured in Baltimore building collapse

| May 7, 2014 | Workplace Accidents

At approximately 10 a.m. on Monday, May 5, nine workers were injured when the roof collapsed on a building they were working in. According to authorities, four of the people suffered serious to critical injuries. Despite the seriousness of the accident, all 13 of the people who were inside at the time of the collapse were able to escape.

The Sparrows Point steel mill closed in 2012, despite the fact that it once employed more than 30,000 workers. At this time, workers are in the process of dismantling the plant.

A spokesperson for the company in charge of the demolition project said, “MCM is focused on the recovery of its nine workers and asks the public to keep them and their families in their thoughts and prayers.”

At this time, the cause of the workplace accident is being investigated by the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health division of the state Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Even though the mill has been closed for a couple of years, many former workers visited the site to see what happened.

Even when a worksite is secured, it is impossible to guarantee that nothing dangerous, such as this type of accident, will happen.

Although there is no information on what caused this accident at this time, the investigation will continue until answers are found. Regardless of why the accident occurred, nothing changes the fact that nine people were injured when the roof collapsed. Along with this, progress on the dismantling of the building has been halted for the time being.
