9 injured in building collapse in Maryland

In Maryland, the prevention of industrial accidents is attempted through diligence and safety procedures. In the case of a recent accident, it's not yet clear if all the vital safety standards were in place. The industrial accident took place after a roof collapsed at the old Bethlehem Steel plant. According to reports, the former steel mill in Sparrows Point has now been responsible for the injuries suffered by nine people.

The May 5 news indicates that nine workers had to be hospitalized after the roof gave way and injured the workers who were inside the building. Four of the people hurt suffered from serious to critical injuries. There were 13 people inside at the time of the accident, and reports state that all 13 were able to escape.

The accident, which took place at around 10:00 a.m., has been described as having a domino-type effect, meaning that one initial issue led to further collapsing. A man on the scene reported that he rushed to the area when the collapse took place, trying to help a man who he said looked like he had fallen from a piece of equipment that was dozens of feet high. He reported that the injured man's face was bloody and had split open.

Most of the people who were injured are reportedly doing well now. The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health division of the state Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation is now looking into the collapse. The company, Hilco Global, will be investigated, since it has previously been cited for a number of illegal activities that included the improper handling of hazardous materials. So far, no reports of wrongdoing have been reported by the OSHA. If the company is found to be at fault, the workers might be able to make a legal claim. Either way, workers in Maryland should stay aware of how to make legal claims in case a similar accident ever occurs at their place of work.
