Maryland teacher killed in car accident

| Aug 8, 2014 | Car Accidents

The highways throughout the state of Maryland can be extremely dangerous, especially when a driver acts in a negligent manner. According to police, a local teacher was killed when her vehicle was hit on the Capital Beltway by a Maryland State Police cadet.

The 18-year-old cadet was on a routine assignment, driving an unmarked SUV at approximately 8:30 a.m. It was at that time that he used an emergency vehicle crossover as a means of accessing the Outer Loop.

Upon making the move, he struck a Lincoln, which hit a jersey wall. From there, his SUV spun out and collided with a Subaru Outback. The 59-year-old woman driving the Lincoln was transported to Prince George’s Hospital Center but was later pronounced dead.

According to neighbors, the woman had been a teacher in the local area for more than 10 years, and she left behind five children.

The driver, as well as two passengers in the Subaru, were not injured in the accident. The cadet, who was placed on leave, as well as another person riding with him, refused to receive treatment.

A spokesperson for the Maryland State Police said, “As a cadet, as a civilian employee, he does not have any police authority [to make that turn], so that’s something the investigators will be looking at.”

Car accidents, resulting in injury or death, are times related to a poor decision by one driver. It is easy to believe that breaking the rules of the road will have no consequence, but many people think this way shortly before causing an accident. For those that behave negligently or recklessly, criminal charges or a civil lawsuit could be the result.
