Study shows Baltimore area is dangerous for pedestrians

| Aug 18, 2014 | Car Accidents

No matter if you live in a large city or small town, when you walk on the sidewalk or shoulder of the road you must be careful of what is going on around you at all times. Pedestrian accidents are common throughout the country, with some areas experiencing more of these than others.

According to a study conducted by Governing magazine, the D.C. and surrounding beltway areas, including Maryland, was ranked as the 47th most dangerous area for pedestrians. Baltimore was more dangerous, ranking at number 22 on the list of 104 metro areas.

The study took into consideration accident data from the years 2008 to 2012 regarding 22,000 pedestrian fatalities. The statistics show that there were roughly 400 pedestrian deaths in the Washington D.C. area during this five-year time span, which equals approximately 1.4 fatalities per 100,000 people annually. Even though this number is alarming, it is not as bad as Daytona Beach, the city that is first on the list with 3.7 deaths per 100,000 people annually.

The study shared its thoughts on why some areas are more dangerous than others are. “Those in low-income areas without cars must walk to their destinations or public transit stops, increasing their exposure.”

Even though pedestrian accidents are more common in some areas than others, each one impacts the person struck as well as their loved ones. If you or somebody close to you has been involved in such an accident, it is important to consider your legal rights as a pedestrian, with the possibility of recovering compensation from the at-fault party.
