The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 created The Occupational Health and Safety Administration for the purpose of reducing workplace hazards and to make sure workers stay safe at work everywhere in the United States. The standards and regulations put forth by OSHA cover all workplaces, from industrial to construction sites, making it possible for any employee in Maryland or other states to report dangerous working conditions.
OSHA grants employees a number of rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Interestingly, employees are also responsible for reviewing these standards, rules, and regulations of their own free will. This information should be provided by your employer. As an employee, you are also allowed to request that OSHA come to investigate your workplace for violations. You have a right to look at and receive a copy of the tests that were done to look for hazards in the workplace, and for your safety and security, your name will be withheld from your employer during this process if requested.
Because of OSHA, you are protected against discriminatory or retaliatory actions that your employer could take, protecting your job and welfare. You are also allowed to look at records of work-related injuries and illnesses for your own knowledge.
If OSHA comes to your workplace and notes a hazard, then that hazard must be corrected within a certain amount of time as required by their regulations. If those violations aren’t repaired, your employer could face fines or penalties from OSHA. As in any work situation, making sure your environment safe is the main concern; with your help, OSHA can make that happen and prevent workplace accidents.
