5 overlooked steps to follow a car accident

Nobody thinks about being involved in a car accident, but just when you least expect it you could find yourself in this situation. After an accident, the most important thing is that you take care of your health. If you have any reason to believe you were injured, even if you don't feel poorly immediately following the accident, you should seek medical care.

There are many steps you can take following a car accident, but here are five that are often overlooked:

-- Take pictures. Most people have a mobile phone, so don't shy away from taking pictures of your vehicle as well as the accident scene. Note: Don't take pictures from dangerous angles, such as standing in traffic.

-- Practice what you will say. Before police arrive, make sure you know what you are going to say.

-- Don't rush to speak with police. Once the officer arrives, let him or her take charge. You don't have to run to the officer to plead your case. This will make you look guilty, even if you aren't.

-- Record the conversation between you and the officer. This may come in handy later on when dealing with insurance companies or filing a lawsuit.

-- Don't be afraid to call out an inaccurate police report. Mistakes happen, and if you find an error on the police report you should bring it to light. It can be changed.

These are just a few of the many things you need to do if involved in a car accident. At some point, especially if insurance companies are involved, some people rely on the assistance of a personal injury attorney.
