1 killed, 1 injured in electrocution case in Maryland

As a person who works with electrical equipment and construction, you're aware that you have to be safe to stay free from burns or electrocution. You may wear rubber soles, use rubber gloves, and could turn off the electricity to an area before you get to work. These safety steps can all help, but if you do end up being electrocuted, you could be badly injured or killed. This is exactly the situation that took place at a Maryland prison, according to a May 7 report.

Officials stated that there was a contracted worker on site who was electrocuted and another who was also hurt when they were working on an electrical control upgrade at the Eastern Correction Institution in Westover. The co-generation power plant is run by the Maryland Environmental Services, which is an independent agency of the state.

The two employees on the scene were working for General Electric Industrial Solutions, helping upgrade the system from a past generation. There's no information on why the men suffered a shock, but the power may have been on at the time when the men were upgrading the system. The prison has stated that there wasn't a disruption in power to any of the 3,200 inmates.

The first worker was electrocuted and suffered critical injuries, dying a short time later. The other worker was still living at the time of the news release, and he was taken to a local hospital in Salisbury, Maryland. Now, the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking into the situation to see what went wrong.
