Work accident results in 1 death of man mowing on highway

If you've ever had to work for a construction or landscaping company that worked along busy roadways, you know that sometimes drivers can be negligent on the roads. Simply taking their eyes off the road for a few seconds can put your life at risk. When these situations happen, you hope that the police will be able to stop the driver before any damage is done, but sometimes, it isn't able to be avoided.

Recently, a man who was an employee of the Maryland Transportation Authority was killed as he did his job on a work crew along I-95. He was working in Havre de Grace when a van traveling on the highway lost control and went off the side of the road. At that point, he was unable to get out of the way of the vehicle and was struck. The 59-year-old man was killed.

The news report stated that the team working on the side of the road had their reflective vests on and had flashing lights at the scene. They had prepared the area for work before beginning. Shortly after arriving on scene and setting up, the 59-year-old began to mow the area.

The van had traveled off the road, stuck a dump truck at the scene, and then struck the man. Police at the scene stated that people who are coming up on construction teams or highway workers should abide by the "move over" laws, which would put their vehicles further from the team for protection. In this case, the 54-year-old man who struck the worker is under investigation, but he has also been hospitalized.
