What can companies do to prevent slip, trip and fall accidents?

According to Carnegie Mellon University, slips, trips and falls are responsible for approximately 15 percent of accidental deaths.

Every year, people throughout the country are injured in a slip and fall accident on the job. Some of these people are lucky enough to make their way back to work without much delay. Others, however, find that they are injured to the point of not being able to work for an extended period of time.

There are many common causes of slip and fall accidents. Furthermore, there are steps companies can take to help prevent such accidents in the future. Here are some of the most effective preventative measures:

-- Avoid wet surfaces. If a wet surface is a must, such as after cleaning a floor, it is important to point this out to all people in the area.

-- Clean up spills. A spill should never be left on the floor for an extended period of time.

-- Be aware of weather related hazards. In cold weather climates, for example, this could include snow and ice accumulation in parking lots and around company buildings.

Some employers do whatever they can to prevent slip, trip and fall accidents. There are others who don't consider this priority. Unfortunately, a lack of attention can lead to an accident that injures or kills an innocent worker.

It is important for employers and employees alike to be familiar with the potential dangers of a slip and fall accident. If a person is injured in such an accident, he or she will need to receive medical treatment. From there, the worker may file a workers' compensation claim.
