Steps for preventing forklift accidents

| Mar 1, 2016 | Workplace Accidents

Forklifts are a big part of every business, with nearly one million of these in use throughout the United States. While these are helpful in many industries, here is something to remember: these can also be dangerous if not used in the appropriate manner.

As noted by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, forklift accidents injure more than 60,000 people every year. Additionally, these types of accidents cause approximately 100 deaths.

Here are some steps for preventing forklift accidents:

— Become familiar with the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

— Make sure all workers know how to properly park a forklift.

— Training is a must.

— Loading problems can be just as dangerous as driving problems.

— Driving issues are varied, including the risk of driving off a loading dock or striking a person.

A forklift accident can happen at any time. The time of day or location doesn’t come into play. If a forklift is in action, there is always the chance that an accident can occur. And when this happens, the possibility of injury or death is very real.

Companies that understand the risks associated with forklift use are the ones that have a system in place for avoiding trouble. This is no guarantee that an accident will never occur, but it goes a long way in enhancing prevention techniques.

As an employee in Baltimore who works in close proximity to forklifts, it is important to understand the dangers associated with this equipment. There are many steps companies and workers can take to prevent trouble.
