Firefighter killed in traffic crash while responding to fire

A firefighter with the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company in Maryland was killed on March 14, as he was responding to a fire call in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The fire department veteran of 21 years worked for the City of Harrisburg Bureau of Fire as a paid employee, but volunteered at four Maryland departments: Citizens, Eureka, Delta-Cardiff and Whiteford. He had been with the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company for 18 years.

The man was headed to his firehouse in Harrisburg to get his fire gear before responding to a townhouse fire. That fire claimed the life of a child and injured several others. The traffic accident occurred just a short distance from his firehouse in Harrisburg. Another news report stated that the driver who struck the firefighter's vehicle was a 19-year-old female who was in an allegedly stolen vehicle. She was reportedly under the influence when the accident happened.

Pennsylvania's governor ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor the fallen firefighter and to remain that way until after the funeral.

When a work-related accident takes the life of an employee, the family may be eligible for workers' comp death benefits. This can help a family with their loved one's final expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and more. For many families, this benefit can be very important to their financial stability when they mourn the loss of a primary breadwinner.

The help and guidance of an experienced workers' compensation attorney can make applying for benefits or dealing with denied claim much easier. In some cases, a third party claim may also be in order, depending on the circumstances in which the employee passed away.
