National Work Zone Awareness Week

Last week was National Work Zone Awareness Week, with a theme of "Work Zone Safety Is in Your Hands." On April 5, all roadway safety professionals were encouraged to wear orange in an effort to show their support for safety in work zones. The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) wanted those in orange to be sure to post pictures on their social media pages with #Orange4Safety.

The National Work Zone Awareness week started in 1999. It was a means of showing both motorists and workers how hazardous work zones could be. According to the American Road &Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), almost 600 people are killed each year in work zones. Another 30,000 are injured. Road construction workers account for around 120 of the fatalities each year.

At workzonesafety.org, there is a wealth of information on this year's safety campaign. The goal is to urge motorists across the country to use extreme care and caution when driving in work zones. In addition, drivers should expect the unexpected. As the busy roadway construction season begins, motorists need to realize that most of the fatalities in work zones are motorists.

Even though the safety week ended last Friday, motorists and workers alike need to keep safety in work zones in mind at all times of the year. If you are injured in a work-related accident in a work zone, you have a right to seek workers' compensation benefits. These can help pay for medical expenses and lost wages, as well as temporary and permanent disability when needed. An attorney can help you realize what your legal options are.
