Did you recently suffer an ankle sprain on the job? Are you concerned about how to best treat this injury?
If you find yourself in this position, it’s important to consult with an experienced medical team. While you may assume that you have a sprained ankle, tests could show something much more serious.
For example, you may have broken a bone. Along with this, it’s possible that you could have torn a ligament.
Generally speaking, an ankle sprain can be treated with the RICE approach:
— Rest. You need to rest or use crutches until you are once again able to support all your weight without any pain.
— Ice. It’s important to regularly ice the area for the first two to three days after the injury.
— Compression. With the help of elastic compression, you can improve your chance of keeping swelling to a minimum.
— Elevation. If possible, raise your ankle above heart level for a minimum of two hours per day.
If your doctor suggests that you use crutches or a walker, be sure to do so until your next visit.
Note: While surgery is not typically required to repair an ankle sprain, this may come into play if you tore a ligament.
An ankle sprain could keep you out of work for an extended period of time. For this reason, you may need to file a workers’ compensation claim. With this approach, as long as your application is approved, you will be able to receive compensation as you recover. If your claim is denied, you will need to file an immediate appeal.
