The dangers of street racing

Motorcyclists love different bikes for different reasons. Some like the sound and power of a Harley chopper, some prefer the stability and comfort of a touring bike, and still others like the speed of a high-powered sports bike. While most motorcyclists ride responsibly, a number of sports bikes in Maryland are flying down the Intercounty Connector (ICC) toll road at blistering speeds. To combat this, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has just announced new measures designed to keep all drivers safe on this stretch of highway.

A Growing Problem

The ICC hasn’t always been a weekend racetrack, but that’s what it’s become. Residents reported that evening and nighttime hours are when the high speeds are at their worst, endangering the motorcyclists and other drivers on the road. The MDTA takes these concerns seriously and has just rolled out a plan to keep motorcycle speeds down:

  • Increased routine patrols
  • Strict enforcement of aggressive driving laws
  • Dash cameras to capture license plate numbers of offending motorcyclists
  • High-definition toll plaza cameras to capture license plates of motorcyclists who resist being pulled over

Significant Injury Potential

The motorcyclists involved in this activity aren’t just in legal jeopardy, they’re in physical danger. Of course, many of them might say that’s exactly the point -- doing illegal maneuvers in live traffic is an incredible rush. However, the consequences can be life-changing (or life-ending). Common injuries from street racing include:

  • Spinal injuries
  • Organ damage
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Severe burns
  • Broken bones

Hopefully the measures imposed by the MDTA will be enough to curb this high-speed behavior before additional damage occurs. However, until that happens, commuters and other drivers on the ICC will need to use added caution to avoid getting into car accidents with these racers.
