Winter months create hazardous conditions for workers

Workers who work outdoors during wintertime already know that this can be cold and unpleasant. Winter weather also causes dangerous conditions that may lead to injuries. While our Maryland winter has been mild this year, the months of December to early March can still pose some major workplace hazards.

Driving

Drivers, or any other employee who must operate a vehicle as part of their job duties, face hazardous conditions when roads fill up with snow, freeze over or become slushy. Workers’ Compensation often covers injuries incurred when driving while on the job. Employers can protect employees on the road by providing proper training for operating vehicles and by properly servicing company vehicles.

Slip-and-falls

Our state’s winter roads are notoriously slippery. Afternoons in the mid-40s and evenings in the 30s and 20s frequently cause roads and walkways to freeze over. This can lead to slip-and-falls among employees, especially those who must labor outside. Fortunately, employers can prevent many slip-and-falls by maintaining clean, safe walkways and workspaces.

Snow removal injuries

In the winter, workers often shovel snow, clear roofs, and scrape ice for their employers. These activities can often result in back and shoulder injuries. To prevent such accidents, employers should vary their employees’ tasks so that they do not have to perform the same motion repeatedly, and provide training to properly perform heavy snow and ice removal.

Unfortunately, even with the best intentions and precautions, workers may still be involved in winter accidents. If you are injured due to a winter hazard, you may be entitled to medical coverage and monetary compensation. It is important that injured workers are protected and covered for an injury during the winter months.
