Teachers are no strangers to job-related injuries

A school can be a hazardous environment, and teachers are no strangers to job-related injuries.

If a teacher or other school employee sustains a workplace injury, they can qualify for worker’s compensation coverage. These employees should contact a qualified legal representative to make sure they get the compensation they are entitled to.

Common teacher-related injuries

Some school-related injuries that could result in worker’s compensation claims include:

  • Slip and falls from spilled food, water in the bathroom, melted snow at school entrances, torn carpet and worn tiles
  • Injuries from the subject matter such as chemicals in the chemistry lab or strains during physical education classes as well as lack of ergonomic support
  • Injuries that range from breaking up fights to protecting students from shooters, and possible psychological trauma related to those incidents.

What to do if you’re injured

If a teacher or school staff member sustains an injury on the job, they should report the incident to a principal or supervisor. Teachers and staff should seek medical attention as soon as possible to address their condition.

First, the employee must report the injury to the site supervisor and seek medical attention.

In some circumstances, benefits may be provided by the School System, but in order to fully covered, employees must file a Claim with the Workers’ Compensation Commission within two years of the accident, or be potentially barred from compensation. Therefore, it is very important to get claims filed properly, professionally, and on time.

A qualified workers’ compensation attorney can help you file your claim and shepherd your case through the system.
