A back injury can change your life

When employees handle materials in the factory every day, it is easy for them to fall into habit and become desensitized to their actions. This is common but incredibly dangerous.

If workers lift and handle heavy materials without concentrating on safety, they could be at risk for severe back injuries that not only affect their ability to work, but also their entire life.

Unfortunately, back injuries are common in the workplace

According to recent statistics:

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that back injuries make up one in five workplace injuries; and
  • Roughly four out of five injuries in manual materials handling work affect the back.

This makes back injuries one of the most common and serious risks workers of all fields of employment could face.

How does a back injury impact a worker's life?

Back injuries can cause long-lasting chronic pain that can limit an individual's ability to move. This can keep injured workers out of work for days or months while they seek treatment, which is why Maryland law entitles covered workers to collect workers' compensation after suffering an accidental injury (Maryland Code, Labor & Employment §9-501).

These injuries also commonly have long-term effects that lead to permanent musculoskeletal disorders.

Workers that do not take the time to receive appropriate medical care - whether that is simply rest and medication or surgery - increase their risk of a significant permanent injury. Such permanent injuries may limit a worker's productivity as well as endanger themselves or co-workers. Workers must recognize their injuries and seek medical care and legal counsel to ensure they protect their rights.
