Purdue Chicken accident leaves worker with injured hand

An employee in Maryland working at Purdue Chicken was injured in an accident recently. While there is not much information on what happened, the news has reported that the worker's hand was injured and that he was working in maintenance. Despite the fact that the worker is expected to recover, it's important to review injury events in the workplace. In this case, the poultry industry can be reviewed, and it's when you do that you can see that the potential for injury working with animals and with birds in general is high.

In a Canadian report for World Poultry, a study conducted by the United States was discussed. In it, it was found that 55.1 percent of people who participated in the study weren't concerned about dead birds, feathers or other kinds of poultry waste. Like machinery that causes accidents, waste is also a hazard for employees in the poultry industry. There are short- and long-term consequences of the hazards related to poultry farming, some of which can include infectious diseases or injury.

Some of the common health hazards suffered by poultry workers include biological, physical, chemical and accidental hazards. Accidental hazards are like those suffered by the employee in the news article. Sprains, for instance, could take place if you twist your wrist wrong while picking up a box. Slipping or falling could result in strains. Your skin could be irritated by being exposed to vaccines, or you could be burned by hot surfaces.

Physical injuries can come from being exposed to high noise levels or long-term exposure to heat or cold. Biological hazards like zoonotic infections can be an issue, since diseases can be transmitted between birds and humans.

These are just some of the injuries you can face as an industrial worker in the poultry industry. Like the worker above, if you get hurt, you need to seek medical attention.
