Stihl outdoor power tools recalled

For many people, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial beginning of summer and many wonderful summertime activities, including boating, camping, and swimming. With an uptick in outdoor activities, personal injury attorneys also notice an uptick in injuries caused by dangerous or defective products that are used in outdoor activities.

For most homeowners, taking care of the lawn is not as enjoyable of an experience as other outdoor activities, but it is a requirement of life in the summer. Every since the invention of the gasoline lawn mower, homeowners have become increasingly reliant on their gas powered and electric power tools. These tools have become so commonplace that it is easy to forget that they are potentially dangerous. Because of the potential dangers involved in power tools, they need to be manufactured in accordance with rigorous safety standards.

Just in time for the unofficial beginning of summer, Stihl Inc. is recalling approximately 2.3 million gas-powered outdoor tools. A defect in these tools could lead to fuel spills, which could lead to burn injuries.

The recall applies to a variety of Stihl models that have a "toolless" fuel cap. Toolless fuel caps do not need the use of tools to be opened or closed. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, ethanol and other fuel additives can distort the toolless fuel caps, which can allow fuel to spill, posing a fire hazard.

The CPSC is cautioning consumers to stop using the products immediately and return them to a dealer for a free repair. A full list of the recalled models is available on the CPSC's web site.
