Johns Hopkins researchers serious about pedestrian accidents

| May 1, 2014 | Car Accidents

Every year throughout the country, thousands of pedestrian accidents occur. In many cases, the person who is struck by the vehicle is killed. Researchers at Johns Hopkins are hoping to cut back on the number of pedestrian accidents and deaths.

Every day throughout Maryland, a vehicle strikes a pedestrian. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in Maryland noted that pedestrian accidents are often fatal. It only takes one distracted moment, either by the driver of a vehicle or a pedestrian, for an accident to occur.

This has become a major problem in Baltimore City, with 700 people struck by vehicles each year. To improve pedestrian safety, injury researchers at Johns Hopkins are marketing a new campaign.

The study by researchers showed that both drivers and pedestrians are equally responsible for these types of accidents, noting that both parties often take part in risky behavior. An online study conducted by researchers, including nearly 4,000 people, concluded that four of every 10 people say they have almost been hit by a vehicle when walking or were struck.

Johns Hopkins University and the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office funded the research as well as the campaign.

From one side of the country to the next, pedestrian accidents are a major problem. Researchers at Johns Hopkins realized this to be true in their local area, and that is why they conducted this research and continue to push their campaign to the public. Not only can these accidents cause serious injury, but many are killed each year when hit by a vehicle while walking.
