A little preparation could stave off workplace accidents

Maryland workers are entitled to a safe, clean work environment. By the same token, employees should take all the necessary steps to ensure that they are as well-protected as they can be. This is especially true of older workers. Even in seemingly safe locations such as offices consisting of desk jobs, workplace injuries can still cause people pain and anguish, not to mention missed time at work.

Many workplace injuries are caused by falls -- about 15 percent, by some estimates. There are many preventative measures that can prevent injuries from falls, if companies would only abide by them. Some of them are:

  • Requiring or encouraging employees to wear appropriate shoes. When it has been raining or snowing, or if conditions are cold enough for ice to form, slip-and-fall injuries are more likely -- either in the parking lot or inside the building.
  • Keeping surfaces dry and clean. This is especially important in winter, and during periods of inclement weather.
  • Cutting out clutter. Employees might have to negotiate their way around power cords, boxes, or unused office furniture that is creating a hazard. Even younger employees could run into trouble from cluttered walkways, especially if they are distracted by a conversation or from typing on their phones.

Even relatively well-maintained workplaces could be the scenes of workplace accidents that can be devastating to those who are hurt. If this happens, injured workers can consult with experienced workers' compensation attorneys, who can help to explain benefits available to people who have been hurt on the job.
