Is the mining industry still dangerous?

Most people are well aware of the fact that the mining industry is one of the most dangerous. Every year, people are injured and killed in mining related accidents. Even so, companies in this industry do not have a difficult time finding workers because of the high rate of pay, as compared to other labor positions.

Even though mining technology and safety protocol has improved over the years, this remains a dangerous industry. According to the United States Department of Labor, the annual rate of mining injuries and deaths has declined with each passing decade. This is good news for mining companies as well as the many workers who are part of this field.

In 2011, injury and fatality rates reached an all-time low. The all injury-rate for the year was 2.73 for every 200,000 hours worked. The fatality rate was .0114 for every 200,000 hours worked.

This was an improvement when compared to the previous year. In 2010, the all injury-rate was 2.81 and the fatality rate was .0234.

It is always good to see a dangerous industry making improvements in the area of safety. No company wants to consider the fact that an accident could cause serious injury or death. Unfortunately, the mining industry remains dangerous due to the overall nature of the work.

Every year, miners are injured and killed on the job. Those who are injured may be able to receive workers' compensation. Furthermore, there are times when the injured can file a lawsuit in an attempt to collect compensation from a negligent third party.
