Does wet weather increase the chance of a car accident?

| Jul 28, 2016 | Car Accidents

As a driver, you know that road conditions can change in an instant. One second you are on dry pavement, but the next you run into some serious rain. It is your responsibility to be cautious at all times, regardless of what this means.

As a general rule of thumb, wet weather increases the likelihood of being involved in a car accident. Fortunately, there are things you can to do prevent trouble.

First and foremost, make sure you can see the road in front of you. This starts with ensuring that your wipers are always in good working condition.

Secondly, make sure your tires are properly inflated and have enough tread. This is your only point of contact with the road, so you don’t want to take any risk as far as your tires are concerned.

Here is something else to remember: you should never use cruise control in the rain. This can lead to loss of traction, which increases the chance of being involved in an accident.

Last but not least, be sure that you always leave enough room between your vehicle and those around you. This gives you more time to stop, especially if you need to do so in a hurry.

Just because wet weather can cause a car accident does not mean you should avoid taking to the road in the rain. What it does mean is that you should change your approach.

Even though you may be more careful in the rain, it doesn’t mean that other drivers will be as well. Unfortunately, this means that you could be involved in an accident that you didn’t cause. Should this happen, remember that you might be able to file a claim against the at-fault driver for your medical expenses and other damages. An experienced personal injury attorney can provide more information on your legal options.
