Beware of drunk or drugged drivers in Maryland over the holidays

The attorneys at all six of our Maryland offices fight for justice and compensation for our clients across the state who were injured in motor vehicle accidents caused by drivers who were under the influence of alcohol as well as of drugs, both illegal and legal. When someone is harmed because of the reckless and unlawful conduct of a driver who got behind the wheel impaired by a substance, the victim may sue the responsible party in a personal injury lawsuit.

December can be dangerous

As we begin a month of holiday gatherings that can include alcoholic beverages, President Trump has proclaimed December 2017 to be National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. The proclamation includes these facts:

  • Number of victims who died in U.S. accidents in which alcohol was involved in 2016? More than 10,000
  • How often someone dies in an alcohol-related collision somewhere in America? Every 50 minutes
  • Number of adults that admitted to driving at least one time under the influence in a 30-day period in 2012? 4.2 million

Take precautions

If you are driving this month, be aware of erratic driving around you and steer clear. When at parties with friends and relatives, designate a sober driver.

If the worst happens and you or a loved one is involved in an accident with a drunk or high driver, seek legal advice immediately so that your lawyer can begin an investigation while the evidence and witness memory are still fresh. Legal counsel will also communicate and negotiate with the involved insurance companies on your behalf.

Your attorney will seek to secure comprehensive compensation for all of your losses -- property, financial, physical and emotional -- in a personal injury lawsuit, through settlement or in trial, if necessary.

If you lost a loved one in such a collision, a lawyer can advise you about your legal remedies such as a wrongful death lawsuit or a survival action.
