What Types Of Workers’ Compensation Benefits Are There?

Workers’ compensation benefits can be divided into several categories, and it is important to know what is available. Possible benefits include:

  • Wage loss reimbursement — Temporary total disability benefits are considered wage continuation benefits. They compensate the injured worker for paychecks lost during the time that he or she is unable to work due to the injury. These benefits should equal two-thirds of average weekly wages up to a capped maximum. We take care to see they are calculated correctly.
  • Medical / hospitalization benefits — Workers’ comp should cover the cost of all medical treatment required to treat the injury. This includes the cost of any necessary surgery and physical therapy. Workers’ comp should also reimburse the cost of all needed prescriptions, as well as crutches, artificial limbs or other necessary apparatus. Workers’ compensation law requires that injury victims be reimbursed for these costs. We make certain that they are.
  • Vocational rehabilitation benefits — If you are unable to perform the work you previously did before your injury or illness, you should be entitled to services that will prepare you for other jobs. Job search and retraining, with the aid of a professional vocational counselor, are options under Maryland law. If you are entitled to these services you would also be entitled to vocational benefits similar to the temporary total disability benefits one receives when unable to work while under treatment.
  • Death and funeral benefits — If you are a dependent of an employee who died due to a workplace accident or illness, you may be eligible for death and funeral benefits.   • Permanent disability benefits — If your injury leaves you with a permanent disability, there are additional monetary benefits to which you may be entitled. If your injury is so serious that you cannot work again, you may be eligible for permanent total disability benefits for life. A lot will depend on whether your condition is classified as permanent total disability or permanent partial disability.
